Please remember, tattoos need to be healed just like any other wound on your body. You can expect some soreness, (although it should not be unbearable,) slight redness and light swelling around the area in the initial days after your tattoo appointment. If the pain is extreme, or you're exhibiting any signs of infection (as listed below,) please contact your doctor.

Instructions

PLEASE NOTE: Tattoo care instructions can vary by artist. It's best to ask your artist directly for their aftercare recommendations.

1. If possible, leave the cling film on for the rest of the day and first night.
2. Clean the tattoo with warm water and unscented soap. With the soap, gently rub off all the mess that has formed beneath the cling film covering - it's made up of plasma, sweat and/or ink... Ew!
3. Thoroughly rinse the soap off, then pat dry with kitchen roll. Make sure no fibres are stuck to the tattoo... That's why
you should not use toilet roll -- too many fibres!

4. Do not apply any moisturiser or any other creams for the first day or two.
5. For large tattoos, you may want to re-cover after the first wash. You'll need to make sure it's well-sealed and secure so no air can get in, and to make sure any movement doesn't cause it to become uncovered. We recommend uncovering it (and leaving it uncovered) from the second evening/night.
6. Once the tattoo is left uncovered, wash the tattoo twice a day (morning and night) with unscented soap. Make sure to thoroughly rinse the area and pat dry as before.
7. From this point onwards, you can start to apply a small amount of gentle and fragrance-free moisturiser/balm. We strongly recommend Butterluxe Tattoo Balm.
8. Repeat steps 6 - 8 until the tattoo is healed.

Healing Time

Healing times can vary from person-to-person and may depend on the size of the tattoo. The initial healing process typically takes between 1.5 - 2 weeks. During the healing process, the tattoo may feel dry, tight and itchy -- Do NOT pick or scratch the tattoo as this can cause infection and/or result in the tattoo healing poorly.

After the tattoo is healed, you can continue to apply
a small amount of gentle and fragrance-free moisturiser/balm (such as Butterluxe Tattoo Balm,) for a week or two. This will help with any dryness.

If any scabs form during your healing process, DO NOT PICK THEM and take care not to accidentally knock/scratch them off during the healing process.

Infections

Infected tattoos are rare but, like with all wounds, can happen. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us. However, in the case of an infection, please consult your doctor.

Signs of an infection include:

  • Redness & Swelling

  • Sensation of heat at/around the site

  • Pain, usually throbbing or spreading

  • Unusual discharge (yellow, green or grey pus)

Do's & Don'ts

  • Do contact your artist for any questions not answered here!

  • Do take showers and gently wash your tattoos using the instructions above/your tattooists advice.

  • Do wait at least 2-3 weeks before contacting your artist about any touch-ups you might need - this gives everything a chance to heal and settle fully!

  • Do try and avoid irritating the new/healing tattoo with clothing - if you can get away with leaving it uncovered by clothes as much as possible, that's best!

  • Do be mindful of contact with surfaces, pets etc. You need to keep the area as clean as possible to promote healthy healing and avoid infection.

  • Do show off your cool new tattoo to your mates. 😎

  • Do not take a bath! New/healing tattoos should NOT be submerged in water - that includes baths, pools, the sea, hot tubs, etc.

  • Do not expose your new/healing tattoo directly to the sun - no sunbathing allowed. Be conscious of sun exposure through windows, such as when driving a car.

  • Do not go on sun beds/tanning booths.

  • Do not expose your new/healing tattoo to any germs/unclean scenarios.
